Frequently asked questions

Chikungunya

What is chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause sudden fever, severe joint pain, muscle aches, headaches, rash and tiredness.

Chikungunya is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly Aedes mosquitoes, which are often active during the day.

Symptoms can include fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, rash and fatigue. Some people may experience joint pain that lasts for weeks or months.

The vaccine may be considered for travellers aged 12 years and over who are visiting areas where chikungunya is present, especially if they are at increased risk of mosquito exposure.

The chikungunya vaccine is given as a single dose. A travel health consultation can confirm whether it is suitable for your destination and personal health needs.

Current protection information supplied for this service is 6 months. Your pharmacist can advise whether further protection may be needed for future trips.

Vaccination may help reduce risk where suitable. Travellers should also use insect repellent, wear protective clothing and reduce mosquito bites wherever possible.

Chikungunya occurs in parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean and island regions. Risk varies by destination and outbreak activity.
