Frequently asked questions

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver. It can lead to both short-term illness and long-term liver complications including liver damage, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Hepatitis B spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. This can include unprotected sex, contaminated needles, medical procedures, tattooing or close contact with an infected person.

Symptoms can include fatigue, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools and jaundice. Some people may have no symptoms at all.

The vaccine is recommended for travellers visiting higher-risk countries, healthcare workers, long-stay travellers, backpackers and anyone who may be exposed to blood or medical treatment abroad.

Vaccination is the most effective protection against Hepatitis B. Travellers should also avoid sharing needles, practise safe sex and ensure medical or cosmetic procedures are carried out safely.

After completing the full vaccine course, protection against Hepatitis B is usually long lasting and may provide immunity for many years.
