Tick-Borne Encephalitis is a viral infection spread through tick bites in parts of Europe and Asia. In severe cases it can affect the brain and nervous system.

The infection is mainly spread through bites from infected ticks found in forests, grasslands and rural areas. In rare cases it can also spread through unpasteurised dairy products.

Early symptoms may include fever, headaches, muscle aches and tiredness. Severe infections can lead to meningitis, confusion, paralysis and neurological complications.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis is found in parts of Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, as well as Russia and parts of Asia, particularly in woodland and rural regions.

Vaccination may be recommended for travellers hiking, camping or spending time outdoors in rural or forested regions where infected ticks are common.

Risk can be reduced through vaccination, using insect repellent, wearing long clothing, checking for ticks after outdoor activities and avoiding unpasteurised dairy products.
