Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that mainly affects the nose and throat. In severe cases it can cause breathing difficulties, heart complications and nerve damage.

Diphtheria spreads through coughs, sneezes and close contact with an infected person. It can also spread through contaminated objects and poor hygiene conditions.

Symptoms can include sore throat, fever, swollen glands, difficulty breathing and a thick grey coating at the back of the throat.

Vaccination is the best protection against Diphtheria. Good hygiene practices and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can also help reduce risk.

Diphtheria can still be found in parts of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and some tropical regions where vaccination coverage may be lower.

A booster vaccine may be recommended for travellers visiting regions where Diphtheria remains a risk, especially if your last vaccination was more than 10 years ago.
